They announced it recently, and I'm quite a fan of Stoli vodka, so I have to ask, has anyone seen it and tried it yet? It's US$60/bottle for this new ultra luxury vodka... quite a pinch on the wallet, so it better not leave a pinch on the brain the next morning.

Premium vodka is for the most part the fault of the smartest advertising people ever to grace the shores of the USA. They turned a Communist product with only one true expression into a capitalist one with 20 million "varieties".

The thing that bamboozles a lot of people with vodka is that all the things that make a vodka great are the opposite of the things that make a scotch or brandy great.

Making vodka is not an art, it is a science, and the more science you jam into it, the better it gets.

You WANT vodka that comes out of the latest high-technology continuous still, you WANT vodka that has gas spectrometry readouts charting its purity levels, you WANT vodka that has been purified to the point that it doesn't matter what it was originally made of. Those are signs of good vodka.

"Subtle flavors" and "French manufacturing" may be things worth paying an extra ten dollars for in a cognac, but in a vodka it's all marketing bamboozling.

Yes, but I have to admire that "marketing bamboozling". I admire smart and talented marketing people. Probably because I am one.

I recently got a bottle of ULTIMAT brand vodka as a promo. It sells for around 60. bucks USD. The bottle is hand blown crystal. I doubt whats inside is much different than Skol or Kamchatka. It is all about the marketing.

Yep, it's all marketing, and if you're willing to play with SCIENCE!, you can use a Brita filter to turn rotgut into Stoli. Brilliant, no?

omg dude, I can't believe you just said that. You better pray to the tiki god's that Lord Vader didn't hear you, or you are in for a seriously bad day. I've seen Darth choke people out for a lot less. But just between you and me, I heard that fruity drinks make him break out.

I've actually had the pleasure of attending a formal vodka tasting with the new Stolichnaya elit. It's absolutely fabulous----better than anything I've ever tasted. Apparently the vodka has a patented freeze-filtration process dating back to the times of the czars in Russia. It's really an amazing process--probably contributing to the high price of the product. I say it's completely worth the splurge, not to mention the bottle itself is beautiful. I gave it as gifts this year for the holidays.

i've tried really loads of vodka's in the world from denmark to american and from france, but the best vodka after waking up in the morning is stolichnaya.

loads of all the other vodka's just give me a alcohol distillery taste in the morning "even after brushing my teeth 10 times"
