You guys are just a bunch of...
human beings with diverse experiences and varied perspectives.

Most of which I'm better for having heard. As for the others, I'd love to understand your passionate stance but it would help me if you could explain it as though I'm ready to listen. Because I am.

Remember, at the end of the day, we all pull up a stool to the same bar.

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

You know, I read this story once, called "Metamorphosis" where this guy imitated being the polar opposite of himself in order to spark debate or transubtantiate on a situation involving people, kids really, who were renting his mansion. Whataminute, maybe that was Scooby-Doo.

There was a similar Star Trek.  But this issue is a little more complicated than property rights:

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

Dean, I didn't write that quote.  Seriously.

Anyways in this last post from me, I just wanted to thank everyone for this awesome look at the issues.  I go to work, and come home to all sorts of ideas and links to follow.  Takes my mind off of my day, and gives me something to think about.  Priceless.

I finally think I am getting close to all of the story.

From CA's look at copyright, to the perspectives from Digg users on what the cause actually is.  Awesome.  And thanks for the links to the actual sites guys.  I keep rereading the posts from Technomancer, underdog and dixie.  Everytime something new.

For the record, I can't/won't claim to know everything (as most of you pointed out, I apparently know nothing...), but it is still worth voicing your opinion and being heard.

Just so you can listen to others.

So to my favourite posts by Hula and the Kapt'n, I say cheers.  Pull up a stool, I got some stories to tell.  Let's get lit!

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

Sounds similar to what I hear about your laws concerning a certain plant that should be pass around to the angry Diggers right about now!

You can possess it no problem, just don't get caught in the process of giving/taking ownership of it. LOL ;-)

See you all at the bar tonight? Cheers!

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

"If some one starts talking about backups and the like, they are completely full of shit.  In analogy, breaking the lock on the door is still considered breaking and entering, even though you don't take the stereo inside."

I would simply like to say the you are the one who is full of sh*t.  I live in one state, and work in another, I stay at friends houses during the week.  I have all of my music (both legally and illegally obtained) saved onto my laptop.  I also have a bunch of my movies (ALL legally obtained)saved on it.  Why? Because when you are in a different state more than you are home, it's nice to be able to watch and listen to any of your music and movies without having to lug the original dvd's or cd's with you.

I have illegally burned cd's for friends.  However I can honestly tell you that at NO point have I ever illegally distributed my movies, it is strictly for convenience purposes.

Are the majority of people going to use code such as this for illegal things?  Yes.  But is copying a movie or cd for your own person use illegal?  NO.  Are there people out there who would use this code for the legally allowable use and not illegally?  Yes.  So get down off your high little pedestal and suck one.  Not everybody with a gun is out to kill people, not everybody with a match is trying to burn a house down.  Not everybody who has the ability to copy a dvd is going to illegally distribute it.

Wow. I started out reading this thread from the beginning (great post Doc), but I can't make it all the way through to the end with these big ass posts. Sorry guys  wink

I think Kevin should be commended. The kid's got big balls.

And lets face it, at the end of the day, copy protection is all about putting more of your hard earned dollars in their pockets.

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

Are you a Digg user?

Did you accept the Terms of Use? http://digg.com/tos

We all had to.

"2. to contribute any Content that is infringing, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, offensive or otherwise violates any law or right of any third party;
3. for any illegal or unauthorized purpose. If you are an international user, you agree to comply with all local laws regarding online conduct and acceptable content"

"Digg may terminate or suspend any and all Services and your Digg account immediately, without prior notice or liability, if you breach any of the terms or conditions of the Terms of Use. Upon termination of your account, your right to use the Services will immediately cease."

So why is it then, when the rules are all very clearly stated, that users get upset when their accounts are removed for their own error?

In general, you can make your point without attacking another member.  It is uncalled for.  It is entirely possibly to disagree with the person without asking them to "suck one".

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

The different points of view on this are interesting to me.  So I thought I would just toss mine out there too.

Blood, sweat, love, vision, and passion is what goes into creating and growing something like Digg.  When you work so hard on something like that your instinct is to protect it.  Which I would not have any other way as users and fans of Digg directly benefit from this by the simple fact that Digg stays in operation.

Now you have the stage set with Digg receiving a cease and desist order that they need to remove the posts from a legal stand point.  Even though we live in a technology challenged legal system Digg has to follow the laws just like any company.  I highly doubt that they just started yanking posts with out making sure the order had legs at that point in time.  I'm sure Kevin and company believed that they had to do this in order to protect Digg and keep the Digg community alive.

All in all to me it really comes down to the outcome here.  People made their view clear and Kevin has stood up and proves that he knows that Digg is alive in large part due to the user base and if the majority wants to risk it all over this then so be it.  Now to me this takes a lot of guts.  He has now stood up and put himself and Digg directly in the line of fire with a big target on their back for the Digg users, fans, and beyond.  How hard would it be for you to put at risk years of blood, sweat, love, and passion?

Just my perspective.

Re: Kevin Rose and the Digg “Riot”

Having been involved in managing community based sites and forums, I have to agree with Dr. Tiki and appreciate what Kevin finally did.

You can stand there and scream freedom of speech and fight the Man and all that... but the bottom line is YOU don't pay for the site, bandwidth and support staff.  YOU aren't cutting pay checks and aren't paying 401K or other benefits for the employees of Digg.  You aren't a business.  They are.  You can claim to be the labor and thereby the backbone... but in reality you are a consumer.  The beauty of Web 2.0 that is so brilliant at it's core is that for the first time the consumer also is the producer.  That's why every company is jumping all over themselves to get into this Web 2.0 action.  It's not for the honor, not for the glory or the humanity.  It's a brilliant business model.  They don't have to produce... you do that for them.  You consume what you produce and give them the power and money along the way.

The child wines about their evil parents and how they are doing everything wrong.  When the child becomes an adult and must take care of their own children... thats when they see the mortality of their parents, and see them as peers.

If the evil corporations are doing it all wrong... then start your own business and do it right.  Otherwise you are simply still a consumer feeding on table scraps that someone else drops.  In the case of Web 2.0, they provide the table for you to drop your food from, and the table from which you grab your own scraps.  Then you claim ownership of their table and say that you can drop what food you want from it?!  Its their table.  You want to own it?  When did that become your right?  It's their table.

Create your own table, otherwise respect those that provide one for you.  In reality, they are doing for you that which you aren't.
