The Manhattan

I love a good Manhattan, and I have tried many a bourbon to make said drink, and I have found that my favorite seems to run towards the cheaper bourbons.

Has anyone else found this phenomenon to be true as well? Do the cheaper liquors seem to make for a better mix then their more expensive counterparts?

My favorite Manhattan recipe:

2oz Old Crow
1oz Sweet Vermouth
1 full dash of Bitters
on the rocks in an old fashioned glass

I use Canadian Club, which is cheapish and tastes pretty good. Do you add a cherry or not?

I've had them with a twist instead of cherry, but only the rye ones for some reason. (At bars, I mean, not at home.)

My mother, bless her hard-drinkin soul, leaves out the cherry AND the bitters.  Me, I'm all about the bitters.  Bitter, bitter me.
